Can Treatments Help to Stabilize My Mental Health?

Mental health is such an important part of overall health, and people deserve access to quality treatments to help them lead healthy, fulfilling lives. However, behavioral health treatment is often stigmatized even though issues like anxiety and depression affect the lives of so many individuals. 

My mental health has always been a challenge. I did not have any mental health issues as a child or young adult, but later as I aged, I started to be pretty unhappy with the way I felt and my thoughts. I started to get panic attacks, and I experienced mood swings that went from one extreme to another. I tried taking medication, but it helped very little initially until the dosage was adjusted. Then I started therapy, and that helped, but over time, the side effects of my medications started to build.

The 5 treatments available to help to stabilize mental health are medication, counseling, therapy, family therapy, and peer support from the loved ones. Medication has helped me tremendously, and I had not felt well mentally in a long time. When I saw my psychiatrist, he said that I needed to go on medication. I was hesitant at first, but after seeing how well my mental health was improving while using it, I became a believer. Counseling has helped tremendously as well, and I was able to talk about my feelings and work through things. Therapy has been very helpful as well, and I have been in individual therapy, couples therapy, and group therapy. Family therapy, I believe, has been the most helpful and my therapist recommended that I go to a group therapy as well.

Medication

Medication can be a very scary thing. Even after seeking treatment, many with mental illness still fear the idea of taking medication, which can have negative side effects. But medication is (usually) effective and can make a big difference for some people with mental health issues.

Counseling

Mental health can be a tricky thing to get a handle on, but counseling is often the best place to start. Counseling can teach you tools and techniques to help you deal with difficult emotions.

Therapy

Psychotherapy can help you deal with a range of mental health issues, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Therapy involves regular sessions with a mental health professional, during which you will discuss your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors in a confidential setting. Your therapist can help you and your loved ones understand and cope with your specific situation and can help you develop coping strategies.

Family therapy

My family therapy with was fantastic. They helped me by giving us the tools we needed, knowledge, and motivation to live a happy and healthy life. They help to stabilize my mental health because they helped me understand that my illness can be fixed. They gave me a community that was willing to help me and answer any questions I had. Their support makes me realize that I am not alone in this fight and that there is hope.

Peer support from the loved ones

The treatment and support that I get from my community is very important for my mental health. My support community includes my therapist, my family, my friends, my coworkers, and my spiritual support. The peer support that I get from my community helps me to stay focused on the positive things in my life. The love, whether it is from a family member, friend, colleague, or therapist, helps me to feel better during difficult times, and reminds me that things will get better. When I share my stories with my peers, it helps them feel safe to share their stories too.

Poor mental health can lead to difficulties in regular life, from frequent hospitalization to an inability to hold a job, all in addition to daily struggles to function at home, school, or with peers. Fortunately, treatment for mental health disorders is a rapidly expanding field, with more options than ever now available to those who need help.
