Strengthening Families
WHAT IS STRENGTHENING FAMILIES ?
Is a program for parents and youth who
desire a strong, united, and healthy family unit. It was
designed to improve family relationships and to reduce the risk
of substance use and problem behaviors in youth.
THIS IS HOW IT WORKS...
Parents and youth participate in two-hour
sessions. In the first hour, parents and youth participate in
separate skill building classes. Parents learn to increase
desired behaviors in their children by using attention and
rewards, clear communication, effective discipline, problem
solving, and limit setting.
Children learn effective communication,
problem solving, resisting peer pressure, consequences of
substance use, and compliance with parental rules. During the
second hour, families practice structured, fun family activities
that reinforce what they learned in their individual sessions
and that are designed to help open up the lines of
communication.
In addition to all the benefits that the
program has to offer, each family receives a $50 cash incentive
upon completion of the program.
