WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH COUNCIL (EYC) ?

Region III Environmental Youth Council was developed on September, 2000 as part of a project funded by Department of Health, Behavioral Health Services Division via Southern New Mexico Human Development Inc./Rural Organizational Project Entity (R.O.P.E.)

EYC is a council made up of area high school youth that can spend time creating and implementing an action plan that would address their community.

Problems within communities are Alcohol & Drugs, DWI/DUI, suicide, tagging (graffiti), crack houses, meth labs, alcohol advertisement, kick backs.

Students that disseminate information to the student body for educational purposes.

EYC's GOALS

Reduce the substance abuse among youth within Southern Doña Anna County. To reach this goal, the council has developed and environmental action plan that addresses the needs in their communities. The overall outcome of this plan is to establish or change community norms, policy and attitudes regarding substance abuse.

The Region III EYC will use their action plan as a guide towards community change.

EYC'S OBJECTIVES

* To decrease the availability of Alcohol, Tobacco

   and Other Drugs (ATOD) to youth in Southern

   Doña Anna County by establishing or enforcing

   community norms, attitudes and policy.

* To educate the youth and the community on

   existing norms, attitudes and policy related to

   ATOD.
